Why Community Matters
Living with an ostomy can feel isolating—but connection changes everything.
At STOMA-toba, community means sharing experiences, learning from one another, and building relationships that support confidence, wellbeing, and everyday life.
Building Community Together
STOMA-toba is in the early stages of building a province-wide community. We are creating spaces for connection, conversation, and support—and we are doing it together with the people who are part of it.
Whether through informal meetups, shared experiences, or future events, this community will grow with the voices and needs of those it serves.
What We’re Building
We are working toward creating opportunities for connection across Manitoba, including:
- Informal meetups
- Educational sessions
- Peer support opportunities
- Community-driven events

Colorectal cancer is no longer a disease affecting only older adults. Rates are rising among younger Canadians, yet Manitobans aged 45–49 remain excluded from the province's organized screening program. ![]()

While Ontario and Prince Edward Island have announced plans to begin screening at age 45, Manitoba has yet to take action. Every year that screening is delayed is a missed opportunity to detect colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most effective and outcomes are often better. ![]()

Colorectal Cancer Canada is calling on the Manitoba government to act. Write to your local MLA and the Minister of Health. Tell them Manitobans in their late 40s cannot afford to wait while the rest of Canada moves forward. ![]()

Our disability doesn't have to disable us.When I found out at age 50 that I was going to have a permanent colostomy, I was devastated. I thought my life was over. ![]()

I thought I'd never be able to eat my favorite foods (I can),![]()

I thought I'd live with dietary restrictions (I don't)![]()

I thought I'd never be able to swim or soak in a hot tub or take a bath (I do)![]()

And I definitely thought I'd have to give up my massages. ![]()

It's perfectly safe to lay on your stomach with a colostomy unless you have other physical limitations or restrictions. I don't, so yep, here I am doing of my favorite places in the world, being pampered. ![]()

Ostomies may be disabilities, but they don't have to disable you. ![]()

They saved our lives so we could LIVE not just survive. ![]()
